The CPU or Central Processing Unit a miniature array of circuits containing over 28 million transistors is sometimes referred to as the "brain" of the computer.

This tiny marvel makes thousands of calculations per second, communicates over enormous distances and displays complex data in an instant, in integrating audio, video, statistical and communications commands. Information directed into the computer through the hard drive and other peripheral devices, is reviewed and then transmitted to the display and other components for further processing. Despite its size and key role in the scheme of things, this tiny device is a most reliable workhorse.

The Pentium III* processors have taken mobile pc performance to a new level. Available at up to 933mHZ, at this writing, these mobile processors are featuring the latest Intel SpeedStep Technology. This new feature allows the user to customize performance. When using battery power, a notebook with the new SpeedStep* Processor conserves energy by dropping it's processor frequency 40 %-50% while maintaining a high level of performance. A manual override allows the user to maximize speed when needed. The system will automatically return to the maximum speed when external power is applied.

Coming soon P4's

Computer performance is not solely based on the speed of the CPU. More than any other component, RAM is critical to the efficiency of the operating system. 64 MB is standard amount today, but more is better.

Consider a second hard drive for backing up. It is mush faster than a tape and you can configure software to save to the drive of your choice. As the price of optical write/re-write drives become affordable, CD's are becoming the new back-up media.

Researchers are working on Molecular switches to replace the transistors now used to produce the current computer chips. Salmon DNA is another material researchers are using as the basic switch.

There is a new breed of internet appliances gaining popularity among mobile users. These 'non-pc devices' collects e-mail, news and corporate data. They are pocket size and about quarter the price of notebooks. It is estimated that by the year 2005, sales could reach 51 million unites.

This year the dvd-ram drive will surface. with a capacity of 4.7gb for single-sided disks and 9.4gb for double-sided disks. It will eventually replace the floppy, cd-rom AND even the videocassette.
